Signs a house needs rewiring.
- Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cable anywhere in the house
- A fuse board with rewirable fuses, or no RCD protection
- Round-pin sockets, or too few sockets and trailing extension leads
- Sockets or switches that are warm, scorched or crackle
- Persistent tripping that comes back after a reset
- No earthing to bathrooms, or no main bonding to gas and water
What a rewire includes.
- Survey of the existing installation and what you want from the new one
- Lighting and socket layout agreed room by room before we start
- New circuits in new cable, back boxes and containment (first fix)
- New consumer unit with RCD or RCBO protection and surge protection
- Main protective bonding to incoming gas and water services
- Accessories, lighting and fitting off (second fix)
- Inspection, testing and an Electrical Installation Certificate
- Notification to building control through our competent person scheme
- 01 Survey We look at the property, the existing installation and what you want to change.
- 02 Quote A written quote setting out the circuits, accessories and what is and isn't included.
- 03 First fix Cables and boxes in before plaster and flooring, coordinated with your other trades.
- 04 Second fix Accessories and lighting fitted, then every circuit tested and certified.

How long does a rewire take?
It depends on the size of the house, how much access we have and whether you are living in it during the work. An empty property runs faster than an occupied one, because we are not working room by room around you.
How much does a rewire cost?
Price depends on the number of circuits and accessories, the construction of the building, and how much making good is needed afterwards.
Do I have to move out?
Not necessarily. Many rewires are done room by room with power kept on elsewhere, though it is dusty and disruptive work, so people often move out for a full rewire if they can.
Will the work be certified?
Yes. A rewire is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NAPIT registered contractor we certify the work and notify building control, and you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate.
